CONA - Celebration of Native Americans Education Day
Native American people from all over the area will be coming together in Freeport, IL. for a celebration of their culture on Saturday, June 7 from 10-5 p.m. This day will help educate people on all aspects of the native life.
Music, drums, storytelling, food, and Native American inspired vendors will be in attendance to share their crafts. Ojibwa elder Kim Sigafus, an Illinois Humanities Road Scholar, will be presenting on the history of Native Americans in Illinois.
A native lodge will be set up, and visitors will be able to enter to hear about living life within it.
The Native American Awareness Committee from Rockford, IL. will also be in attendance, and there will be drumming and singing during the opening ceremony. Later, everyone will be able to join the Friendship Dance. Flute playing as well as storytelling will round out the day, with Hoo Haven paying a visit with birds.
There will be a children’s crafting corner, where children and their parents can learn how to make native crafts.
Wonderful fry bread will be available for purchase, and the public is encouraged to bring a blanket or chairs, and sit outside and listen to music.
