Well, I didn't too too badly as far as book sales, but I sure made a lot of contacts and did quite a bit of networking. Sometimes it's not all about the book sales. Sometimes it's about who you know and what they can help you with. And sometimes you are the important person in the "who you know" scenario. Authors helping authors is one of the best ways to get your work noticed and out there.
Writing doesn't have to be solitary endeavor all the time. Don't be afraid to get out there and meet other authors. Even if you both write the same thing and they could be construed as your competition. A little competition never hurt anyone. Remember, there are no new ideas, just new ways to present them. Two people can have the same idea and present it to the world entirely different. Working together with other authors is a great marketing strategy. You never know how you can help someone along their writing journey, and imagine the impact one person can have on your writing career.
